§ 5/10/12: First Smart Scholars AVID Celebration: On Thursday, May 3 over fifty parents, students, staff and guests gathered to celebrate the College of Saint Rose and University at Albany college students who volunteer at Albany High School for Smart Scholars Early College High School, Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) and Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID). The college volunteers are role models for the high school students who tutor students, help develop peer study groups and provide guidance on what students need to do now to be college-ready. The students were members of Smart Scholars and AVID. Smart Scholars are enrolled at Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) while still at Albany High School. They graduate with a high school diploma and a HVCC transcript for approximately a year of college credit. AVID teaches student skills to make students successful in college. Guests included Ms. Etwin Bowman, Ms. Felita Orr, Mr. Christopher Fernando (all from the University at Albany), Dr. Aja LaDuke (College of St. Rose), Ms. Evelyn Maclutsky (NYS Department of Education), and Dr. Raymond Colucciello (Superintendent). The dinner was hosted by Dr. David McCalla and Mr. Mike Panetta, Albany High School principals. The event will be held annually.
§ 4/17/12: George Benson was appointed full-time Smart Scholars Coordinator on April 2, 2012. Mr. Benson’s previous position, Theme Coordinator for Citizenship Academy, has been posted for applicants and will be filled as soon as possible. Smart Scholars Early College High School has students enrolled at Hudson Valley Community College while simultaneously enrolled at Albany High School. Students may complete up to a year of college by the time they graduate from Albany High School. The Early College High School is designed for students from groups that are traditionally underserved, and underrepresented in postsecondary education – i.e., students whose likelihood of attending college without this opportunity would be limited, such as first generation college students, underachieving students, and those who qualify for free and reduced price lunch.
§ 2/27/12: The Citizenship Academy is pleased to announce a New York State Department of Education Smart Scholars Early College High School grant. For additional information see the Smart Scholars Early College High School page at http://ahscitizenship.weebly.com. There will be a meeting for interested families at 6 p.m., Monday, March 5 in the first floor cafeteria nearest Washington Avenue.

Students are trained to serve as teen judges who listen to teen advocates speaking for both sides. Alternative sentencing is used to encourage first-time, low level youthful offenders to improve their behaviors. “The Albany High School Youth Court will implement restorative justice and will reintegrate the youth offender into the community, while sending appropriate messages to the offender regarding unacceptable behavior” said Albany Mayor Gerald D. Jennings, in a statement.
§ 1/9/12: The 13th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. and Labor Celebration "Together We Vote, Together We Win... Your Vote Is Your Voice" will be held from 10:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at Hackett Middle School on Delaware Avenue in Albany. The event is free and open to the public. The Citizenship Academy is sponsoring Albany High School students to act as guides and to serve lunch.
§ 1/4/12: Happy New Year! I wanted to share with you the progress being made in developing the Citizenship Academy at Albany High School. Aside from our emphasis on improving student performance, one of our current priorities is developing a unique identity for each academy.
Citizenship sponsors a monthly public service activity. It can be an event such as preparing for the Equinox Thanksgiving Dinner or a drive such as the Albany U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants Blanket and Coat Drive.
Every week Citizenship celebrates an Albany citizen trying to make a difference. A photo and brief biography of potential future candidates would be appreciated.
As teachers introduce project based learning, the problem is posed as a citizenship issue: public service, social justice or citizenry.
We appreciate your suggestion and comments as we continue to forge the identity of Citizenship.
